Forest Lake Water Filtration Systems

Local Forest Lake homeowners often reach out to PBS Plumbing when they start to notice changes within their water, be it the presence of a strong smell of chlorine, cloudy water, or the build-up of mineral deposits on their appliances and faucets. Although water supplied through the local water department is treated to meet all applicable standards, many of the homes within the Forest Lake area still experience issues with their water quality that affect daily usage and, therefore, the long-term functionality of appliances requiring water.

PBS Plumbing provides each of its customers with a complete assessment before beginning any installation of water filtration systems. This assessment will include checking the taste and smell of their water, measuring hardness, and reviewing how their water affects their plumbing system and appliances. All water filtration systems are installed by licensed master plumbers who will not only explain how each system operates but will also schedule regular maintenance so that customers can expect consistent performance from their systems for many years to come.

Twin vs Triple Filter System

Individuals on mains water usually don’t get much visible sediment (compared to individuals relying on tank water, for example); however, ultra-fine particles (i.e., particles that are smaller than 100 micron, the width of a human hair) can clog up carbon filters much quicker than anticipated and reduce water pressure. The issue of elevated sediment is especially prevalent in areas with known water quality issues or an influx of sediment; for example, due to public works, flooding, and drought, which are all common causes of elevated total suspended solids levels in mains water. So, whilst carbon filters do block sediment and it is possible to run a dual carbon system, consider whether a triple filter system with a sediment pre-filter and dual carbon set-up is more suitable.

Dual Carbon
Dual carbon will give the best result for reducing the maximum amount of chemicals on a whole house scale on mains water. The combination of filters we most commonly recommend is the maximum chemical reduction combination, which consists of:

Filter 1: 5 Micron sediment filter
Filter 2: 20 Micron low pressure drop coconut carbon – reduces chlorine without compromising on water pressure
Filter 3: Your choice of carbon block:
0.5 Micron chloramine reduction coconut carbon – composed of catalytic carbon, which has exceptional adsorption abilities (and can help to reduce chloramine, unlike standard activated carbon, which requires a longer contact time to reduce this chemical)
0.5 Micron lead (heavy metals) reduction coconut carbon – if you don’t get chloramine in your water source, consider this cartridge for the added benefit of reduced lead and other heavy metals

Three-Stage Water Filtration Systems

Three-stage water filtration systems are very popular among homeowners located in Forest Lake because they address multiple common water quality problems, including sediment, chlorine, and various heavy metals found within the water supply.

Stage 1 – Sediment Filter

The first stage is a sediment filter designed for the removal of sand, rust, grit, and other small particles contained within the incoming supply of water. By stopping sediment at the entry point of the filtered water system, this filter prevents blockages from forming, protects the interior of the pipework, and reduces wear and tear on many household appliances that use water.

Stage 2 – Water Softener

The second stage is a water softener, which reduces the presence of the minerals calcium and magnesium that are responsible for creating hard water. By reducing the presence of these minerals, there will be less scale build-up on taps, shower screens, and within appliances, which will make cleaning easier and help appliances to last longer.

Stage 3 – KDF/GAC Filter

The third step includes GAC filtration media (granular activated carbon) in conjunction with KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) filtration media. The GAC filtration media provides the ability to remove chlorine, heavy metals, and organic material from the municipal supply. The third step will also reduce the growth of bacteria and will greatly enhance the taste and smell of any water you filter at this step. GAC/KDF filter systems can be used as whole-house or under-sink filters.
