Water Filtration Systems for Bulimba

Homeowners in Bulimba frequently connect with PBS Plumbing when they want their water to taste better and reduce the amount of deposits left on their faucets and appliances. While the local water source may have been treated per state regulations, many residents may deem it not up to their standards or find large sediment build-up after plumbing work is completed, along with mineral deposits left behind on showerheads, faucets, and inside household appliances.

Before recommending any filtration device, PBS Plumbing performs an extensive analysis of the water source of your home to determine what is different about the taste of your water and the odour of your water, calculating the total hardness of the water (including minerals) in your plumbing system, and then determining how each of these variables will impact your water supply and your appliances. All of our filtration systems are installed by licensed master plumbers, who will explain how your specific filtration system functions and how to maintain it over its lifetime.

Twin vs Triple Filter System

Individuals on mains water usually don’t get much visible sediment (compared to individuals relying on tank water, for example); however, ultra-fine particles (i.e., particles that are smaller than 100 micron, the width of a human hair) can clog up carbon filters much quicker than anticipated and reduce water pressure. The issue of elevated sediment is especially prevalent in areas with known water quality issues or an influx of sediment; for example, due to public works, flooding, and drought, which are all common causes of elevated total suspended solids levels in mains water. So, whilst carbon filters do block sediment and it is possible to run a dual carbon system, consider whether a triple filter system with a sediment pre-filter and dual carbon set-up is more suitable.

Dual Carbon
Dual carbon will give the best result for reducing the maximum amount of chemicals on a whole house scale on mains water. The combination of filters we most commonly recommend is the maximum chemical reduction combination, which consists of:

Filter 1: 5 Micron sediment filter
Filter 2: 20 Micron low pressure drop coconut carbon – reduces chlorine without compromising on water pressure
Filter 3: Your choice of carbon block:
0.5 Micron chloramine reduction coconut carbon – composed of catalytic carbon, which has exceptional adsorption abilities (and can help to reduce chloramine, unlike standard activated carbon, which requires a longer contact time to reduce this chemical)
0.5 Micron lead (heavy metals) reduction coconut carbon – if you don’t get chloramine in your water source, consider this cartridge for the added benefit of reduced lead and other heavy metals

Three-Stage Filtration

The three-stage filtration system offered by PBS Plumbing is the most popular choice among residents of the Bulimba area, as it treats many of the common quality concerns associated with tap water in a single filtration system. Some examples of treated contaminants associated with tap water include sediment, chlorine, and trace amounts of heavy metals.

Stage 1: Sediment Filter

The sediment filter removes all visible solids such as sand and rust, as well as grit and fine particulates that are often present in incoming municipal water supplies. By preventing any sediment from entering your plumbing system, the sediment filter reduces the chances of blockage, extends the life of the pipes, and decreases the wear and tear on your appliances that utilise water.

Stage 2: Water Softener

The second stage of the three-stage filtration process uses a water softener to decrease the number of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, which cause hard water. Reduced mineral levels in tap water produce less scale or build-up on faucet and shower fixture surfaces, simplifying cleaning and increasing the workflow of water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines.

Stage 3: KDF/GAC Filter

The final stage in the three-stage filter system is a KDF/GAC filter. This filter removes chlorine, heavy metals and organic materials from municipal drinking water. Additionally, it decreases the likelihood of bacteria growing in the filtered water.
